California’s Bold AI Moves: New Laws and a Major Veto
In September, Governor Gavin Newsom considered 38 AI-related bills, marking a significant step for California's role in AI regulation. While he vetoed the controversial SB 1047, he signed 18 AI bills into law, tackling everything from deepfakes to AI in healthcare. Authored by State Senator Scott Wiener, the bill sought to make AI developers responsible for implementing safety protocols to prevent critical harm. The proposed rules targeted AI models costing over $100 million and utilizing 10^26 FLOPS during training.
Opposition from Silicon Valley: Companies like OpenAI and AI leaders, including Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun, opposed the bill, claiming it would hinder innovation.
Governor's Reasoning: Newsom expressed concerns that the bill’s regulations were overly broad, applying stringent standards to large systems without considering the specific risk factors.
Support and Criticism: While Newsom received praise from figures like Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi for rejecting the bill, Wiener expressed disappointment, calling the veto a setback for AI safety.
Despite the veto, Newsom has signed 18 other AI-related bills in the past month and continues to seek expert guidance to establish effective AI regulations. California is leading the charge on AI regulation, aiming to balance innovation with safety. These new laws highlight the growing need to protect privacy, prevent misuse of AI, and ensure transparency in how AI systems are built and used.

Google’s AI Breakthrough in Chip Design: The Era of AlphaChip
Google DeepMind is again pushing the boundaries of technology, this time with a revolutionary AI system for chip design. AlphaChip employs an edge-based graph neural network that understands relationships between chip components and adapts to various designs. Google is taking a major step forward by releasing a pre-trained checkpoint of AlphaChip, opening the door to further research in AI-assisted chip design.
AlphaChip: Google DeepMind’s AI system leverages reinforcement learning to design superhuman chip layouts in hours rather than months.
Performance Boost: It has already improved the last three generations of Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), speeding up the entire chip design cycle.
Wider Adoption: Companies like MediaTek also integrate AlphaChip into their chip development for cutting-edge smartphones and devices.
The real game changer here is the feedback loop AlphaChip creates:
AI designs better chips,
These better chips improve AI models,
Improved AI models design even better chips.
This cycle is likely to drive AI development at a pace that human designers may find hard to keep up with, potentially reshaping the future of AI and hardware.
OpenAI Eyes ChatGPT Price Hike to $44 by 2029
According to internal documents obtained by The New York Times, OpenAI is planning to raise the price of ChatGPT Plus subscriptions. The current $20 monthly fee may increase to $22 by the end of this year, with a steeper hike pushing the price to $44 per month by 2029.
Gradual Price Increase: ChatGPT Plus could rise to $22/month in 2024 and $44/month by 2029.
Investor Pressure: OpenAI's projected losses of $5 billion this year are driving the need for higher revenue.
Operational Costs: High expenses for AI infrastructure and daily operating costs, including $700,000 per day for ChatGPT alone, are contributing to the planned price hike.
With 10 million paying users, the increase could face pushback as some users already find the $20 price too steep. Stay tuned for further updates as OpenAI navigates this challenge.
Raspberry Pi and Sony Unveil $70 AI-Powered Camera Module
Raspberry Pi has teamed up with Sony to launch an AI-powered camera module priced at $70, designed for seamless use with all Raspberry Pi microcomputers. This AI Camera uses Sony’s IMX500 image sensor for onboard AI processing, eliminating the need for additional accelerators or GPUs.
AI Processing: Enables edge AI solutions for developers to process visual data more efficiently.
High-Quality Imaging: The 12.3 MP camera can capture footage at 10fps in 4056 x 3040 resolution or 40fps at 2028 x 1520.
Compact Design: Measuring just 25 x 24 x 11.9mm, it’s similar in size to the Camera Module 3.
This new AI Camera is perfect for Raspberry Pi users looking to explore AI-based image processing without the hassle of extra hardware. Keep an eye on what the Raspberry Pi community will build with this new tool!
