Nvidia Expands AI Footprint in India with New Partnerships
Nvidia is ramping up its presence in India’s expanding AI market through a series of strategic partnerships with some of the nation’s largest companies. At the ongoing AI Summit in Mumbai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang unveiled new deals aimed at deploying the company’s cutting-edge AI chips and technology across multiple sectors in India, which is fast emerging as a crucial growth market for AI innovation.
AI Infrastructure with Reliance: Nvidia is partnering with Reliance, India’s most valuable company, to build the necessary AI infrastructure to support a wide range of applications. This collaboration is set to enhance India’s AI capabilities by creating large-scale cloud solutions that cater to various industries.
Indus 2.0 with Tech Mahindra: Tech Mahindra will leverage Nvidia’s AI chips and software to develop Indus 2.0, an AI model focused on Hindi, one of India’s most widely spoken languages. This initiative aims to strengthen AI accessibility and capabilities in regional languages, aligning with India’s push for localized tech solutions.
Massive Chip Deployment: Tata Communications and Yotta Data Services will acquire tens of thousands of Nvidia’s H100 AI chips by the end of the year. These chips will power AI-driven advancements in sectors like data management, telecommunications, and cloud computing, marking a significant boost to India's AI infrastructure.
These partnerships build on Nvidia’s existing relationship with Reliance, which already includes plans to create AI language models for Indian languages and AI cloud infrastructure. Other Indian companies, including Wipro, Infosys, and Flipkart, are also tapping into Nvidia’s AI expertise to drive their AI initiatives forward.
As Nvidia intensifies its collaborations with Indian firms, CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the transformative potential of these efforts, stating, “India used to be a country that exported software. In the future, India will be a country that exports AI.” With more than 500,000 Indian developers now part of Nvidia’s developer program, the company is helping India position itself as a global leader in AI development and innovation.

Policy Shift at OpenAI: Miles Brundage Departs to Pursue Independent AI Research
Longtime policy researcher and senior advisor Miles Brundage has announced his departure from OpenAI after nearly six years with the company. Brundage, who played a key role in OpenAI’s AGI readiness team, shared in a post on X and in his newsletter that he will be moving to the nonprofit sector to pursue independent research and have more freedom to publish his findings.
Focus on Independent AI Research: Brundage believes his impact as a researcher will be greater outside of the corporate world, allowing him to advocate for responsible AI development with fewer restrictions.
Changes at OpenAI: His departure marks a significant shift within OpenAI’s AGI readiness team, with some projects being redistributed across other divisions. Joshua Achiam, head of mission alignment, will take on a portion of Brundage's responsibilities.
OpenAI’s Response: OpenAI expressed its support for Brundage’s decision, emphasizing its gratitude for his contributions and excitement about following his future work in the AI policy space.
With a string of recent high-profile departures at OpenAI, including executives like CTO Mira Murati and research VP Barret Zoph, Brundage’s exit adds to the growing list of industry veterans seeking new avenues to influence AI development. As the company faces internal and external challenges, it will be interesting to see how these changes affect OpenAI's future direction.
TSMC Alerts U.S. of Possible Huawei AI Chip Export Violation
TSMC has raised concerns with U.S. authorities regarding a potential violation of export controls involving Huawei. TSMC reported that it had alerted the U.S. government to a possible attempt by the Chinese tech giant to circumvent restrictions that prevent the production of AI chips for Huawei. The U.S. imposed these controls two years ago to limit China’s access to advanced technologies, particularly those that could bolster the Chinese military’s capabilities.
Huawei’s Alleged Attempt to Skirt Controls: According to TSMC, Huawei might be seeking ways to bypass the export controls that prohibit the use of U.S. technology in AI chip production. These regulations were put in place to curb China's access to AI chips that are critical to advancing military and defense technologies. The specific details of Huawei’s actions remain unclear, but TSMC’s alert highlights the growing tensions around the use of high-end technology in geopolitical power struggles.
Impact on U.S.-China Relations: This development underscores the ongoing tech battle between the U.S. and China, particularly in the AI sector. The U.S. government has been increasingly concerned about China’s progress in AI, which could pose national security risks. The latest move by TSMC to alert the U.S. government reflects the chipmaker’s effort to stay in compliance with international laws and safeguard its relationship with the U.S., which remains a critical market.
TSMC's actions come at a time of heightened scrutiny on China’s tech ambitions and its potential to sidestep restrictions. As the situation unfolds, it is likely to impact future export control policies and the global semiconductor supply chain.
