Google.org's $20M Push for AI-Driven Scientific Breakthroughs
Google is doubling down on its commitment to advancing science with AI. Through its philanthropic arm, Google.org, the company has announced $20 million in cash and $2 million in cloud credits to support researchers tackling complex scientific challenges using AI.
Nonprofit Focus: The fund targets academic and nonprofit institutions worldwide, offering non-equity funding for projects requiring advanced AI tools.
Strategic Goals: By supporting researchers, Google aims to foster innovation and position itself as a key partner for future breakthroughs.
Global Impact: Fields like rare disease research, materials science, and sustainability are prime candidates for funding.
Selective Grants: Only about 15 organizations will benefit, ensuring significant funding per project to fuel substantial advancements by 2026.
This initiative underscores Google’s belief in AI’s transformative potential in science, following DeepMind's groundbreaking work like AlphaFold. As CEO Demis Hassabis states, the fund aims to spark collaboration between private and public sectors, driving enthusiasm and progress in AI-driven research.

Indian News Agency Sues OpenAI Over Copyright and Misinformation
Asian News International (ANI), one of India’s leading news agencies, has taken legal action against OpenAI in a case that could set significant precedents for AI companies operating in India. ANI has accused the AI giant of misusing its copyrighted content to train its models and spreading fabricated information, sparking concerns about the intersection of AI and intellectual property laws in the world’s most populous country.
Copyright Claims: ANI accuses OpenAI of unlawfully using its content to train AI models and spreading false information attributed to the agency, including fabricated interviews.
Legal Proceedings: The Delhi High Court issued a summons to OpenAI but withheld an injunction, citing the complexity of the case. The next hearing is set for January.
Broader Context: OpenAI, already facing lawsuits worldwide, defended its practices by emphasizing compliance with copyright laws and offering data collection opt-out options.
This lawsuit highlights growing tensions between AI companies and content creators, as news agencies push back against potential misuse and misinformation risks. The outcome could influence global standards for AI and copyright, particularly in media. For ANI, the lawsuit is not just about copyright—it’s about safeguarding journalistic integrity in an era where misinformation can spread rapidly, undermining public trust.
Sam Altman Joins San Francisco’s Government Leadership
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and a prominent figure in the tech industry, has been appointed as one of seven co-chairs on San Francisco Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie’s transition team. This move highlights the growing involvement of tech leaders in shaping the city’s future amidst its ongoing challenges.
Tech Meets Governance: Altman’s appointment reflects a broader trend of Silicon Valley leaders stepping into San Francisco’s political sphere, leveraging their expertise in metrics-driven decision-making.
City Challenges: Mayor-elect Lurie, inheriting issues like public safety, homelessness, and slow economic recovery, aims to address these with a team that includes influential tech executives.
Altman’s Vision: Altman emphasized his commitment to improving the city where OpenAI was founded, signaling a focus on solutions driven by innovation and prioritization.
San Francisco’s post-pandemic struggles and shifting political dynamics have opened the door for tech leaders to bring their problem-solving skills into governance. As Altman and others take on these roles, the city’s ability to integrate technological expertise into public policy will be put to the test.
