OpenAI Drama: A Co-founder leaves for Anthropic and its President takes 'Extended Leave of Absence'

John Schulman, the co-founder of OpenAI and a key figure in developing ChatGPT, has left the company to join competitor AI startup Anthropic. This move signifies a notable change in the AI research field as Schulman aims to concentrate more on AI alignment at Anthropic.

Additionally, OpenAI President and co-founder Greg Brockman is taking a break until the end of the year to relax and recharge after leading the company for nine years. Brockman shared this news via social media, stressing the need for rest while reaffirming OpenAI's mission to develop safe AGI.

  • Schulman explained that his move was driven by a desire to engage in more hands-on technical work and explore new perspectives at Anthropic.

  • The co-founder joined OpenAI after earning his PhD at UC Berkeley and was instrumental in leading the reinforcement training team that developed ChatGPT. He clarified that his departure was personal and commended OpenAI's dedication to alignment research.

  • Schulman's departure, along with Greg Brockman's extended leave, means a shift in leadership. While OpenAI's remaining leaders are highly competent, these changes may slow decision-making processes or alter strategic priorities in the short term. This could delay advancements or the implementation of new alignment techniques in ChatGPT.

Schulman led the reinforcement training team that fine-tuned ChatGPT. His departure may affect ongoing projects and innovations. However, OpenAI's strong team is likely to maintain continuity, though there might be a period of adjustment.

Elon Musk Files New Lawsuit Against OpenAI

In a surprising turn of events, Elon Musk has filed a new lawsuit against OpenAI. Five months ago, Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming the company breached its contract and should revert to its original non-profit status. Two months later, Musk dropped the lawsuit.

Today, Musk has filed a new lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging he was "manipulated" into co-founding the non-profit organization, which has since become the for-profit OpenAI. This lawsuit reiterates many claims from the previously dropped suit.

The new suit states, "Elon Musk’s case against Sam Altman and OpenAI is a textbook tale of altruism versus greed... Altman, in concert with other Defendants, intentionally courted and deceived Musk, preying on Musk’s humanitarian concern about the existential dangers posed by artificial intelligence (AI)."

The suit further accuses Altman and his associate, Greg Brockman, of manipulating Musk into co-founding OpenAI by promising it would pursue a safer, more transparent path than profit-driven tech giants.

Nvidia Faces Controversy Over AI Training Practices

Nvidia is currently facing scrutiny following a leak from 404 Media, which indicates the company used videos from platforms such as YouTube and Netflix to train its AI model, Cosmos. According to 404 Media, Nvidia acquired over 100,000 YouTube videos and built a dataset of 38.5 million URLs. While Nvidia asserts that their AI training practices are fully compliant with copyright law, both YouTube and Netflix have expressed concerns that this data collection method infringes on their terms of service.

This situation underscores the ongoing debate surrounding the use of copyrighted materials for AI development. Nvidia defends its practices by invoking fair use principles, asserting that copyright law protects specific expressions rather than underlying data. Nonetheless, internal communications reveal that some employees questioned the ethical implications of these practices. As Nvidia continues to advance in the AI sector, its approach to data acquisition remains a critical point of discussion.

Stocks are Falling, a Rough Week for the Tech World Costs $615.6 billion

This week, the tech sector faced a setback as a Monday sell-off wiped out $615.6 billion from major tech stocks. Disappointing earnings and doubts about AI investments contributed to the decline. A federal judge’s antitrust ruling against Google added to the uncertainty, challenging the dominance of high-tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, and Meta.

Despite this, analysts view the drop as a correction rather than a crisis. Key tech stocks remain strong year-to-date, supported by robust cloud and digital ad spending. The ruling could impact Google and influence other ongoing antitrust cases, but the industry’s core fundamentals, including continued investment in AI and strong performance in digital advertising, remain solid.
