OpenAI Co-Lead Leaves for Google: A Shift in Video Generation Leadership
Tim Brooks, co-lead on OpenAI’s video generation project Sora, has left to join Google DeepMind. This marks another major leadership departure for OpenAI, raising questions about the future of Sora and its competition with other video generation models. Here’s what you need to know:
Tim Brooks moves to Google DeepMind: Brooks announced his departure to work on video generation technologies and "world simulators" with DeepMind. This continues his expertise in cutting-edge AI research.
Sora faces delays: OpenAI’s video generator Sora has yet to be released, reportedly facing technical setbacks. Initial reports suggest that making a one-minute video clip took over 10 minutes in its early development.
Growing competition: While Sora struggles, competitors like Runway and Stability are securing high-profile partnerships. Notably, Runway signed a deal with Lionsgate, while Stability recruited director James Cameron.
Leadership exodus at OpenAI: Brooks’ exit adds to a series of recent high-profile departures, including CTO Mira Murati, chief research officer Bob McGrew, and more.
With Brooks' departure, OpenAI faces increased pressure to bring Sora to market as it navigates competition and leadership challenges.

OpenAI Unveils ‘Canvas’ Interface for Seamless Writing and Coding Collaboration
OpenAI launched a new interface for ChatGPT called “Canvas,” designed specifically for writing and coding projects. This feature adds a workspace next to the chat window, allowing users to generate and edit content directly. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Canvas workspace rollout: Available in beta for ChatGPT Plus and Teams users, Canvas allows users to generate writing or code and edit specific sections with ease. Enterprise and Edu users will get access next week.
Editable workspaces trend: OpenAI joins competitors like Anthropic and Cursor in offering flexible, editable workspaces, where users can adjust AI outputs without starting from scratch.
Enhanced features for coding: With Canvas, developers can generate code, add in-line documentation, and use the “review code” button for suggested edits. You can also ask ChatGPT to explain sections of code for better understanding.
User-friendly interface: Users can adjust text length, rewrite content in another language, or fine-tune outputs, making it ideal for long-form content and complex coding tasks.
OpenAI’s Canvas introduces a more intuitive way to collaborate with ChatGPT, combining editing flexibility with a streamlined interface. As AI tools evolve, this feature puts OpenAI in line with competitors while offering new capabilities to boost productivity.
Google Intensifies AI Race with New Focus on Reasoning Capabilities
Google is ramping up efforts to create AI that mimics human reasoning, a technology that could transform problem-solving in fields like math and programming. This move intensifies the ongoing battle with OpenAI, which recently launched its reasoning AI model. Here’s the latest:
Reasoning AI development: Multiple teams at Google have been working on AI reasoning software, aiming to solve complex, multi-step problems. The company is using "chain-of-thought prompting," which allows the AI to pause and reflect before generating responses.
Competition with OpenAI: Google is chasing OpenAI’s o1 model, known internally as Strawberry. While OpenAI has gained attention for ChatGPT, Google remains a top contender, focusing on advancing its reasoning capabilities.
Ethical considerations slow Google: Despite its strong technical abilities, Google has taken a cautious approach to releasing AI products, balancing ethical concerns and public trust in its brand.
Recent breakthroughs: Google showcased AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2, which excelled in solving math problems at the International Mathematical Olympiad. Its AI assistant, Astra, also made waves at Google’s developer conference in May.
As Google advances its reasoning AI capabilities, the race with OpenAI heats up. While OpenAI may have taken the early lead, Google’s deliberate and innovative approach keeps it a strong contender in this AI marathon.
Nvidia's Blackwell AI Chip Faces Unprecedented Demand
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang revealed demand for the company’s next-generation Blackwell AI chip as “insane,” with major tech players like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta scrambling to secure units. In an interview with CNBC, Huang revealed that the chip, expected to cost between $30,000 and $40,000 per unit, is in high demand as companies ramp up their AI data centers to support tools like ChatGPT and Copilot.
Nvidia’s stock has surged 150% year-to-date, bolstered by the AI boom, and the company projects several billion dollars in Blackwell shipments in the coming months. Huang emphasized Nvidia’s commitment to continuous innovation, aiming to increase performance and efficiency while reducing costs and energy consumption.
