OpenAI’s Altman Sparks Speculation as Users Anticipate Upcoming Releases

Rumors are swirling about OpenAI’s upcoming release, fueled by a social media post from CEO Sam Altman. Altman’s photo of a strawberry plant, captioned “I love summer in the garden,” is believed to hint at an internal project codenamed “Strawberry,” which may introduce advanced reasoning skills to OpenAI’s models.

Altman has stoked the speculation by engaging with anonymous accounts on X, including “Strawberry Guy” and “Jimmy Apples,” who speculate about OpenAI’s plans. This engagement has drawn the attention of tech leaders and increased the buzz.

Since the release of ChatGPT, OpenAI has been a hotbed of speculation about future models. Altman has teased a major upgrade with GPT-5, but the company has yet to release GPT-4.5. Recent updates to GPT-4o have been minor, and major new releases remain unconfirmed.

While Altman’s posts have fueled anticipation, some AI enthusiasts are frustrated with the ongoing rumors. Despite the hype, it’s unclear when or what significant updates will be released.

Surprise Glitch: ChatGPT Answers English Questions in Welsh

ChatGPT users in the UK were left bewildered when OpenAI’s chatbot started answering English-language queries in Welsh! Yes, you read that right—users asking questions in English were suddenly met with responses in Welsh. The Financial Times reported that this strange glitch, occurring with the new voice interface, has perplexed those who neither speak Welsh nor live in Wales.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Earlier this year, some users experienced a similar bug where ChatGPT mixed Spanish and English in its replies.

In response, OpenAI has suggested users switch their “Speech” setting to English from “Auto-detect” to avoid this glitch. However, they haven’t promised this fix will solve the problem. This quirky mishap underscores a familiar issue with AI language models—“hallucinating” or producing unexpected outputs.

SoftBank Drops Intel Deal, Eyes TSMC for AI Chip Production

SoftBank has abruptly ended its collaboration with Intel on a planned AI chip project, citing Intel’s failure to meet critical specifications for volume and speed. The Financial Times reported that the partnership's breakdown, occurring amidst Intel's broader restructuring efforts including recent layoffs, highlights the challenges facing the U.S. chipmaker. Despite this setback, SoftBank remains committed to advancing its AI technology and is now pivoting towards TSMC for production.

In addition to this shift, SoftBank’s subsidiary, Arm, is making strides in the AI sector. Arm plans to unveil its AI chips by spring 2025, with mass production slated to begin in fall 2025. This development aligns with SoftBank's broader vision to enhance its AI capabilities and establish a significant presence in the AI chip market, investing $960 million in upgrading its computing facilities and aiming for a global rollout of AI data centers by 2026.
